Noncoupled respiration, therefore, yields an estimate of ETS capacity. Experimentally uncoupled respiration may fail to yield an estimate of ETS capacity, due to inhibition of respiration above optimum uncoupler concentrations or insufficient stimulation by sub-optimal uncoupler concentrations.
