Erich Gnaiger (Austria) SCIENCE AND ADVENTURE. The World as a Laboratory: Exploring Mitochondrial Fitness

Erich Gnaiger, Professor at the Daniel Swarovski Research Laboratory, Department of Visceral, Transplant and Thoracic Surgery at the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, and CEO of OROBOROS INSTRUMENTS, will share some of his experiences in the many expeditions he and his team have undertaken to investigate mitochondrial function at extreme conditions: These studies have included (a) analysis of Alaskan huskies before and after the 1,100 miles long Iditarod race, b) OXPHOS analysis and acclimation of muscle mitochondria at the Everest base camp located 5,364 m above sea level, c) evaluation of mitochondrial fitness in permeabilized muscle fibers obtained from traditional lifestyle Inuit hunters in Northern Greenland compared to Western lifestyle Inuits and Danish participants of the 42-days expedition.

Erich Gnaiger, who is the president of the Mitochondrial Physiology Society, will be a guest of the University of Cape Town from March 20th – 27th to conduct an O2k-Workshop on high-resolution respirometry using the OROBOROS Oxygraph-2k and speak at the Mitochondrial Physiology School organized by Associate Professor Edward Ojuka of the Exercise Science and Sports medicine research group.
