Description
The free ETS capacity, βE, is the ETS capacity corrected for LEAK respiration, βE = E-L. βE is the respiratory capacity potentially available for ion transport and phosphorylation of ADP to ATP. Oxygen consumption in the ETS state, therefore, is partitioned into the free ETS capacity, βE, and LEAK respiration, LP, compensating for proton leaks, slip and cation cycling: E = βE+LP (see free OXPHOS capacity).
Abbreviation: βE

Coupling control states for βE
- Reference state, ZX: ETS capacity, E = EΒ΄-ROX
- Background state, YX: LEAK respiration, L = LΒ΄-ROX
- Metabolic control variable, X=ZX-YX: Scope of uncoupler stimulation, free ETS capacity, βE = E-L
Flux control factor
- Β» Flux control factor, FCF
- Coupling control factor, 1-YX/ZX: E-L coupling control factor, ETS coupling efficiency: jβE = βE/E =(E-L)/E = 1-L/E
Compare
- mt-Preparations Free OXPHOS capacity, βP = P-L
- Intact cells Free ROUTINE activity, βR = R-L
