Partner circulars Proposal phase

2015-02-27 COST MitoEAGLE
Dear COST Action Participants,
We would like to welcome you to MitoEAGLE. We are overwhelmed by the numerous responses (46 groups) and the great interest in this COST Action, which encourages us in our ambitions.
For up-to-date information on participants and Working Groups, please check the following links:
» http://www.bioblast.at/index.php/COST_MitoEAGLE (*)
At a first glance, the four Working Groups (WGs) seem to be appropriate for the consortium. Feel free to update or change your selection of the WGs you will join, particularly when the WGs will be elaborated more precisely. Please note that we have changed the focus from “human and mouse models” to “human and rodent models”. Furthermore, we would like to ask you, whether you consider the specific focus on gender to be appropriate or if we should keep a general balance for all EAGLE topics (Evolution - Age - Gender - Lifestyle – Environment)?
In order to participate in a COST Action, participants will need to register in the COST electronic database, e-COST, with affiliation profile and CV. Multiple participants may register for each institution. Registration is very simple and straightforward and can be found on:
We would like to ask you to forward us the name of your groups' main contact person (first name, last name) and the corresponding e-mail used in the e-COST registration within the next week. ‘Proposers’ will then be invited among the main contact persons through the e-COST submission tool. ‘Proposers’ have to finally accept the invitation by following the link in the invitation e-mail.
Sandra will manage these further steps in our COST Action application.
Best regards,

Erich and Sandra

Originally listed Working groups (WG)

WG1. MitoEAGLE data base on gender and mt-function in health and disease

  • Mainly published data from WG participants will be cataloged in the detail beyond the published record (anonymised data on individuals in addition to group averages; tabulated results in addition to figures; conversion to common SI units; comparability of normalization).
  • Data management systems - diversity vs. unification to manage the MitoEAGLE biometrics database.
  • Measures of mitochondrial respiratory function in human and rodent tissues, blood cells and cell lines will be structured according to the EAGLE background, with specific emphasis on gender-specific mt-function and gender medicine; joint publication.

WG2. Challenges on quality control for reference data in mitochondrial physiology

  • Basic concepts and communication: Consolidation of concepts and nomenclature on mitochondrial respiratory states and control parameters; MitoPedia; joint publication.
  • Laboratory standards: Protocols, technologies and standard procedures; data base on laboratory protocols.
  • Reference data in mitochondrial physiology: Quality control, documentation, bioinformatics standards.

WG3. Inter-laboratory test and outreach

  • An inter-laboratory ring test will be introduced in practice as a world-wide innovation in the field of mitochondrial respiratory physiology: design and implementation; reference sample dissemination; test protocol(s); data analysis; joint publication.
  • Comparison of results between and within instrumental platforms.
  • Logistics for extended future collaboration in Europe, North and South America, Asia, Australia and Africa.

WG4. Training and data sharing

  • Recommendations for quality control, data reporting and data sharing beyond the published record.
  • Concepts on Open Access and institutionalized service for data management, data mining and health-care conforming standards of data interpretation.
  • Summary on strategic dissemination and education programme for MitoGlobal EAGLE.

Partner invitation 2015-02-28

Dear colleagues:
A COST application MitoEAGLE is in preparation, following discussions over the past years at various meetings, on a global mitochondrial network. The project is called MitoEAGLE, for Evolution, Age, Gender, Lifestyle and Environment. COST Actions support networking, not primary research.
Four working groups (WG) are suggested – open for discussion and further elaboration:
  • WG1. MitoEAGLE data base on gender and mt-function in health and disease
  • WG2. Challenges on quality control for reference data in mitochondrial physiology
  • WG3. Inter-laboratory test and outreach
  • WG4. Training and data sharing

The deadline for submission is 2015 March 24. To get an idea, can you let us know if you are interested in the project in general, and which working groups you might be interested in participating? If you agree to be ‘on board’, we will add you to the list of the (informal) EAGLE consortium:

Partner invitation 2015-02-24

Dear colleague:
The reason for this Email is to follow up on an idea discussed over the past year at various meetings all over the world, on a global mitochondrial network to bring together scattered data in the field of mitochondrial physiology and medicine.
The project is called MitoGlobal EAGLE or mtEAGLE, for Evolution, Age, Gender, Lifestyle and Environment. The attached summary of the mtEAGLE project is a first draft for a COST project proposal – open for discussion and further elaboration. COST Actions support networking, not primary research (see below).
In the attached draft, four working groups (WG) are suggested:
  • WG1. mtEAGLE data base on gender and mt-function in health and disease
  • WG2. Challenges on quality control for sharing data in mitochondrial physiology
  • WG3. Interlaboratory test and outreach
  • WG4. Training and data sharing
The deadline for submission is 2015 March 24. To get an idea, can you let me know if you are interested in the project in general, and which working groups you might be interested in participating?
I am looking forward to your feedback. If you agree and you are going to be ‘on board’, we would add you to the list of the (informal) EAGLE consortium:

Some further COST information:

  • I was involved as a participant in two COST projects, ‘Mitofood’ and more recently ‘Hypoxia sensing, signalling and adaptation’:
  • COST Actions are networks centred around nationally funded research projects in fields that are of interest to at least five COST countries.
  • The financial support averages EUR 130 000 per year for a four-year period. - http://www.cost.eu/COST_ActionsEarly Stage Researcher (ESR) - is a term used to define a researcher whose career spans less than 8 years between the date of the PhD/doctorate (or similar experience) and the date of involvement in the COST Action. Periods of career leave have to be added to this time span. COST approved a specific strategy for early stage researchers.
