MiPsummer 2007, MiP2005, MiP2003 and MiP1999, and many Courses on
High-Resolution Respirometry were held in this secluded alpine village.

Schroecken (Vorarlberg)

is an alpine village, located 150 km West of Innsbruck in the scenic valley of Bregenzerwald, at the slope of the Hochtannberg Pass, most famous for its winter sports facilities in the Arlberg region. Schröcken (left) offers an ideal environment for relaxation and mountaineering in summer and autumn – www.tiscover.at/schroecken.

All together

Participants will stay at Hotel Mohnenfluh, Hotel Tannberg, and guest rooms in walking distance. Meals will be served at Hotel Mohnenfluh (www.tiscover.at/mohnenfluh; Tel +43 5519 2030) for all participants. Your accomodation will be booked through your MiPsummer registration.

Weather, Excursions

Mid July is the top summer season in this area, popular for mountain walking and climbing. The magnificent alpine flora is blooming at this time, and our walks will take us through the most beautiful plant reserve of Vorarlberg.
The culture and history of alpine farming in this area famous for the Alp cheese will be explained (cheese will be tasted) at an excursion to the Alpmuseum, which is unique in Austria.
The evenings at the altitue of 1400 m may be chilly, and the surrounding mountain tops may receive snowfall even during summer. Therefore, one travels to the Alps prepared. For walking tours, good shoes, a raincoat and warm pullover are advantageous. No specific mountaineering equipment is required for excursions. A bathing suit could be recommended for an adventurous swim in the chilly lake Körbersee or Kalbelesee.

Scientific board

Invitation
The Mitochondrial Physiology Society decided at their general meetings during MiP2007 and MiPsummer 2007 to organize the '2nd MiPsummer School on Mitochondrial Physiology' on 12-18 July 2008 in Schroecken, Austria.
Based on contributions by several members of the MiPadvisory Board, we extend our invitation and ask you for your oppinion, interest, and potential support for this MiPevent. We are confident to continue a successful tradition in line with MiPsummer 2007, by again addressing this activity of the MiPsociety to students (in the widest sense of the word).
We offer the '2nd MiPsummer School' for up to 70 participants, with particular focus on OXPHOS, respiratory chain and mitochondrial respiratory (dys)function in the context of Mitochondrial Physiology. The main topics will evolve according to the specific input by the lecturers and suggestions by participants. A large number of reserach and clinical groups are now entering the field of mitochondrial functional diagnosis, and students require an up-to-date background that can be provided by lecturers who are leaders in the field.
This MiPevent (12.-18. July 2008) preceedes directly the 15th European Bioenergetics Congress in Dublin, Ireland (EBEC 2008).
Full cost, 6 days (accomodation, all meals, registration): € 320.- for students and € 640.- for 'non-students', plus € 55.- for optional MiPtransfer from Bregenz to Schroecken (subject to change, final information will be provided with the registration form).
I thank those colleagues who already agreed to support this MiPsummer School by their valuable contributions to the evolving scientific programme. We welcome further suggestions and contributions, and thank for your cooperation.
Looking forward to seeing you this July
with kind regards,
The Mitochondrial Physiology Society

MiPsummer 2008 - Topics

Considering the dynamic structure of mitochondria in living cells, it is quite appropriate to develop the programme of MiPsummer 2008 in terms of a dynamic interplay between suggestions by the lecturers and tutors, and interests expressed by all participants. The MiPsummer2008 Program is emerging with the following Topics of Lectures (morning sessions) and Focus Groups (afternoons, some evenings):
  • Respiratory control in isolated mitochondria and permeabilized cells and fibers.
  • Substrates used in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation studies and the Q-junction approach.
  • On respiratory control ratios and uncoupling.
  • Mitochondrial and apoptisis: signaling and respiratory function.
  • Mitochondria in signaling pathways: Mechanisms on NO and ROS.
  • Ischemia and reperfusion in the rat heart. Does the mitochondrial damage occur during ischemia?
  • Humans - The effect of developmental age on human skeletal muscle mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation.
  • Mitochondria, genetics, and obesity in mice - an early project.
  • Isolated mitochondria, permeabilized cells and fibers, or intact cells: Which model is 'best'?
  • Respiration in permeabilized heart fibers versus two populations of isolated mitochondria in the aged rat heart.
  • Permeabiliized muscle fiber and isolated mitochondrial respiration in human skeletal muscle biopsies.
  • Mitochondrial membrane potential: why and how to measure?
  • The TPP+ electrode for measuring mitochondrial membrane potential.
  • Oxygen kinetics and nitric oxide.
  • Resting respiration in 'State 4' – the LEAK state.
  • Metabolism and acid production - aerobic and anaerobic flux.
  • Mitochondrial targeting of protein import.
  • The mitochondrial defect in the aged rat heart and the impact on the increased damage following ischemia in the elderly rats heart - a cardiolipin story.
  • The mitochondrial defect in heart failure in dogs: A story of abnormal oxidative phosphorylation, but with normal ETC complex activities. The answer is in respirasomes or supercomplexes.
  • Liver mitochondrial defects in the aged rat.
  • ...

We ask all speakers and tutors for focus groups, to send us a short list of questions, which will provide for students a guideline on the level of the presentations(balance between introductory and advanced). Posters (or simply 'projects') will be presented (10+5 min or 5+5 min) by participants who submit their abstracts and are selected for presentations.
