ROS and EPR

Since Oroboros Instruments had invited Noxygen (Dr. Bruno Fink) to offer a workshop on ROS/NO detection in parallel with the Oxygraph-2k course, it is important to clarify that there is no business relationship between Oroboros Instruments and Noxygen. We intended to bring together two key methodologies in the field of mitochondrial respiratory physiology, with an enormous potential for closely related applications.

During a recent discussion in the lab of Dr. Andrey Kozlov (his collaborators Susanne Haindl and Christina Piskernik participated in the September course), I had the chance to take a look at the new benchtop Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectrometer (MS200) from Magnettech, which Andrey purchased very recently. In his evaluation, Andrey compared the Magnettech MS200 versus Bruker (e-scan; now distributed by Noxygen). Andrey pointed out the following important advantages of the Magnettech EPR spectrometer: (1) Improved performance and extended spectral (g-factor) range, which is important for the accurate baseline detection and for integration procedures, a common way of signal quantification in EPR spectroscopy and absolutely necessary for detection of a number of biomolecules containing transition metals; (2) more user-friendly software for running the instrument, with active developments to eliminate some existing bugs. The Bruker software for the analysis of EPR spectra is better developed than the corresponding software from Magnettech, but this can be compensated by applications of other available software packages; (3) lower price. We recommend to contact Andrey Kozlov for further information. Our aim is the improvement of RO(N)S detection in conjunction with high-resolution respirometry.

Your expert comments are welcome. If you are interested, we can install a discussion forum on respirometry and related methods on the Oroboros website, or simply circulate important comments by e-mail.
