Abstract: This general introduction will elaborate on the physiological characteristics of intestinal integrity and permeability. Specific attention will be paid to the digestion and absorption of protein. Subsequently, the two approaches to study intestinal integrity as applied in this thesis, an in vivo human intervention model and an in vitro human cell model, will be introduced.
