The 7th MiP Conference represents the continuation of a series of MiPevents focusing on mitochondrial physiology in health and disease. MiPevents have their roots in a small meeting organized spontaneously during a bioenergetics summer school in Grenoble (France) in 1999, and held in September as a ‘High Alpine Seminar’ MiP1999 in Schröcken, Vorarlberg (Austria):

At the present exciting time in the history of mitochondrial and cellular bioenergetics, it is just appropriate to take one step away from the rush of daily events, for reflections on the history, discussions of the present and imaginations into the future of Bioenergetics.

MiP2002 followed as a satellite meeting to the European Bioenergetics Conference (EBEC) and BioThermoKinetics (BTK) in Bordeaux - Arcachon (France) with two main topics on ‘Diffusion limitation for ADP and oxygen: Kinetics in vitro and in vivo’ and ‘Mitochondrial volume regulation: structure-function relations’.

The welcome to the 3rd Conference on Mitochondrial Physiology, held in September 2003 again in Schröcken, included a statement with direct relevance for MiP2010 in two respects: ‘MiP2003 will serve as a basis for a FEBS Advanced Course, and also to establish MiPs - the "Mitochondrial Physiology Society".’ The MiPsociety or MiPs was founded on the spot at the conclusion of MiP2003, after a creative and interactive meeting according to our invitation: ‘We are looking forward to an excellent MiPconference with high-level presentations, and fruitful discussions in a pleasant and personal environment’ (Erich Gnaiger and Kathrin Renner, local organizers). The MiPwebsite http://www.mitophysiology.org was launched as an open door to a world-wide MiPcommunity, emphasizing our mission on ‘continuing a tradition of rigorous mitochondrial bioenergetics; integrating molecular, cellular and organismic physiology and pathology.’

Seven years later, the teamwork of the MiPboard under the leadership of our General Kathrin Renner-Sattler (General Secretary of MiPs) was in fact the basis of our successful application for the FEBS Workshop MiP2010.

Mitochondrial Physiology – The Many Faces and Functions of an Organelle was the title of MiP2005, the 4th Conference on Mitochondrial Physiology held at the birthplace of the MIPs (Schröcken, September 2005), with generous support by the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF). Since then MiPconferences were organized in excellent cooperation with the Biochemical Society as MiP2007 in Ambleside, Windermere, UK (organizers: Guy Brown and Mike Murphy; 64th Harden Conference: Mitochondrial Physiology), and with the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, integrating MiP2009 in Mitochondrial Medicine 2009 in Washington DC, USA (program organizers: Douglas Wallace and Erich Gnaiger).

The MiPsummer School was initiated in 2007 and 2008 again in Schröcken (Austria). As a first MiPevent in the USA, MiPsummer 2009 was organized by Steven Hand in Baton Rouge (Louisiana). MiPsummer 2010 is fresh in our minds, following the kind invitation by Vilma Borutaite to Lithuania (Druskininkai). The enthusiastic feedback and continued excellent evaluation by the MiPparticipants encourages us to continue this tradition: the 5th MiPsummer School will be held end of May 2011 in Copenhagen (Denmark) - Michael Christiansen and his team will do their very best as hosts and organizers of MiPsummer2011.

Lively discussions in a personal, informal atmosphere are part of our tradition, with unique opportunities to exchange ideas during sessions, during breaks with Walks & Talks, and relaxed evening round tables. The spirit of open discussions is well known as a hallmark of MiPmeetings, where young scientists meet the experts, and participants get a chance and proper motivation to advance ongoing projects and develop future collaborations. We are confident that this spirit will be alive during the MiP2010 FEBS Workshop, in the alpine environment at high altitude of nearly 2000 m, taking place at the University Centre Obergurgl, Tyrol. The award received from the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) for organizing MiP2010 provided not only basic funding, but allowed us to support a large number of young investigators through grants form the FEBS Youth Travel Fund (YTF) and FEBS Transcontinental YTF, maintaining a high level of Young Investigator Presentations (YIP) in the tradition of the MiPs. The guidelines for FEBS Workshops are in full accord with perspectives of the MiPsociety on keeping our meetings small in number and high in quality (and altitude), interactive and productive. We thank Prof. Dr. Karl Kuchler (Medical University Vienna, Austria) for his support as Chairperson and 'Member-in-Charge' of the FEBS Advanced Courses Committee. We are grateful to all MiPsponsors, and thank the members of the MiPboard for their excellent collaboration. And most of all, we thank all MiP2010 participants and the MiPartists for joining us and for their high-level scientific contributions – welcome to MiP2010.
