Development of a physiotherapy module: effects of physical activity on cardiovascular risk factors in middle-aged subjects

Abstract

It is well established that physical activity provides numerous health benefits, including reductions in risk for a variety of diseases (e.g. coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes) and improvement in functional ability. However, the time course of the preventive or therapeutic effectiveness of physical activity is not well established. The main goals of WP8 is (i) to compare the fitness and health status of a group of subjects that has been physically active for at least 6 years with an age and sex matched group of sedentary persons; and (ii) to monitor changes in fitness and health status (including mitochondrial function) of the sedentary subjects starting with physical activity assisted by physiotherapy.

Progress and next steps

MitoFit training:
The MitoFit group consists of 15 male and female participants (40-65 years) who are regulary physically active and started training in spring 2016 until spring 2017.
They meet once a week (75 min) for training which is focusing on endurance, strength and coordination. The control group is an active group (age and gender matched) who participated in a regular and supervised physical activity program over 6 years.
The study aim is:
- to compare the fitness and health status and monitor changes of the matched group of sedentary persons and
- to monitor changes in fitness and health status (including mitochondrial function) of the sedentary subjects starting with physical activity
