Abstract: In Paper I (3) evidence was given to show that inorganic phosphate is esterified when dihydrodiphosphopyridine nucleotide (DPNH2) is incubated aerobically with a particulate fraction of rat liver in the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), Mg++, cytochrome c, and inorganic phosphate labeled with P32. The presence of Mg++, cytochrome c, ATP, and oxygen was required for the esterification reaction. The data have been interpreted to mean that, as electrons pass from DPNH2, to oxygen over the cytochrome system, inorganic phosphate is esterified. This interpretation is in agreement with the prediction (4, 5) that some esterification of inorganic phosphate may occur during electron transport between primary acceptors and oxygen to account for the known high efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation during pyruvate oxidation (4). β€’ Keywords: NAD β€’ Bioblast editor: Gnaiger E
